STAT 150 Advice from
Student Interviews
(Multiple asterisks indicate that many students offered this advice.)
****** Get involved with the department and with Stat Club NOW ... attend “Shack
Night”, bowling night, hiking events ... anything you can do to get to know
your fellow students/professors. This will enrich your experience as a student.
*** Don’t miss class and stay on top of the material. It is NOT like high
school where missing class and slacking off is not so hurtful.
** Take the required computing class as early as possible. This will be very
helpful when you take Stat 330 and even your other
classes.
* Don’t give up on the curriculum especially if you feel the first year is a
bit dry. Classes become more interesting in your 2nd year and beyond.
* Learn to balance school and friends.
* Go to the Stat Lab ... this place is for YOU. You can make lots of great
friends and receive very helpful assistance.
* Don’t wait until your senior year to think about what your next step will be
after graduation. Keep your eyes open for all options throughout your career.
Attend as many departmental seminars as possible. Seek the advice of faculty as
early as possible.
* Get to know your fellow STAT 150 students. You may not always have classes
with them and this quarter is a unique opportunity to get to know them well.
They may become your closest friends and study partners throughout your career.
* Go to your professors’ office hours frequently. Even if you think you know
the material, visit to confirm your understanding.
* Take “Methods of Proof” early as this material will pop up in other classes
(math and stats).
