Stat 301 – Fall 2011 (Mini-project 2)

CATEGORICAL

·         Does tapping a soda can reduce amount of fizz/explosion when a shaken can is opened after ten seconds?

·         When dropping an egg in a tube from 17 feet, is the egg less likely to break if it lands on Frosted Flakes or Honeycomb cereal?

·         Does a song’s perceived popularity among peers affect whether or not a person prefers that song over a less popular song?

·         Do people respond differently when asked “how was your day” versus “what did you do today”?

·         Do students answer a question about their study habits differently depending on how the question is asked?

·         Are people more likely to read a smaller amount of legal copy?

·         Do students respond about exercise habits differently depending on whether they are told the results will be published?

·         Does wording of a question (positive or negative) affect response (positive or negative)?

·         Are students more likely to be convinced to take a briefcase of a million dollars (with negative side effect for another person) if the question is written on a page with pictures of money vs. a blank page.

·         Does the range of numbers you give students to pick in, affect whether they pick an odd or an even number?

·         Are students more likely to say they taste a difference in water samples when the samples actually do differ?

·         Are people more likely to overestimate their IQ after drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee?

QUANTITATIVE

·         Does tapping a soda can reduce amount of fizz/explosion when a shaken can is opened after ten seconds? (Both, but probably best not to treat this RV as quantitative?)

·         Are students able to build a popsicle stick bomb faster from a visual diagram or written instructions?

·         Do students remember more words when given picture representations whether than the words?

·         Does putting participants under time pressure negatively impact how quickly they can complete a math puzzle?

·         Will people taking a longer survey rate themselves as more tired at the end of the survey?

·         Do people write more “slanted” when given a blank noted card instead of a lined note card?

·         Do students remember more words if hear them orally or given a written list?

·         Does a penny come cleaner if soaked in Coke or Baking Soda?

Stat 301 – Winter 2010 (Mini-project 1)

·         Incentive’s effect on completion if given  before completing a survey or after completion

·         Can yawning be contagious

·         Do people respond to a doorbell ring more quickly than a knock on the door?

·         Do different types of paper (with/without lines) affect how a person draws?

·         Does the order of responses affect subjects’ answers to a question in a survey

·         Does a change in wording affect subjects responses to a sensitive question

·         Wording difference between “happy” and “unhappy” in the same question

·         Effect of phrasing of a question on elderly locals

·         Does cardstock or printer paper create the best paper airplane (measured in distance)

Do Cal Poly students tend to have more general knowledge concerning political issues or popular culture?

 Do people have a (blind taste test) preference between the Sierra Mist and 7-Up?

Do males answer a question regarding exercise/working out habits differently depending on whether they’re asked by another male or a female?

Does the color of food (cookies in this case) influence one’s perception of the food’s taste?

Are “people” on Myspace more likely to add an unknown person as their friend if the unknown person claims to be female, rather than male?

Is there a difference in the number of breaths a fish takes in a minute if he’s in cold water, compared to water at room temperature?

Does knowing the subject of scrambled words in a word scrambler game help improve peoples’ scores in the game?

Are students more likely to agree with a statement they read, regardless of if the statement is phrased positively, or negatively?

Are people less likely to use a public restroom if (1) there’s a sign on the door indicating the restroom is under observation and (2) there’s an individual holding a clipboard standing outside the restroom?

Do World of Warcraft players respond differently when asked whether or not they’re happy vs. whether or not they’re unhappy with the progress of their raids?

Does the size of the bowl affect what people perceive to be one serving size of cereal?
