Stat 301 – Week 1
Assignments
This homework is due at the beginning of class Friday.
This does not mean wait until Thursday night to start
As soon as possible
- Log into the 301 course page in
Blackboard and complete the “initial course survey” test (under the
Assignments tab). Note, there are no right or wrong answers, this is
just data collection for me.
- Make sure you have access to
Minitab for the entire quarter. My recommendation is to download a
free version of Minitab 15 from Cal Poly. See instructions on course
webpage. If you are a Macintosh user, you can use Minitab in the
library/any IT run computer lab or you can download the R software
package for free (see very brief instructions on course webpage). Also
make sure you have a mechanism for transferring Minitab files you start in
the Statistics Studio to your home computer.
- Notice the errata page for
the text (http://www.rossmanchance.com/iscam/errata.html)
For Tuesday
- Finish Day 1 handout
- Complete Investigation 1.1.1
parts (a)-(e) (p. 2-4)
For Thursday
- Review online solutions to Investigation 1.1.1 (in
BB, under Course Materials, Brief Solutions to Investigations) and bring
any remaining questions to ask in class
· Practice
problems 1 (in Blackboard, under the Assignments tab, select Practice Problems
and then PP 1. Once you submit your
answers, Blackboard will then display solutions and I will also provide
individual feedback as time allows (e.g., between 9 and 10am).
- Read the Section 1.1 summary
and bring questions to class
For Friday
- Practice problem 1.2.2 (p.
24)
- Read the Section 1.2 summary
and bring questions to class
HW 1 – to be submitted at the beginning of class,
Friday, Sept 26
1) Consider all NFL
football games played last weekend as the observational units in a study.
(a) Identify three quantitative variables that could be
recorded on these games.
(b) Identify three categorical variables that could be
recorded on these games.
2) Exercise #8 (p.
82)
3) Exercise #10
(p. 83)
Hint: Part (c)
requires some additional calculations.
4) Exercise #9
(p. 82-3)
Note: You should use technology to create the bar
graph in (a), such as Excel, Minitab, etc.
You then need to insert this graph into your written assignment so that
it is easily found.
|
To use Minitab to create a segmented bar graph:
- Enter the two-way
table into columns C1-CY including the row and column names (where Y-1
is the number of EV groups)
- Choose Graph > Bar
Chart, select “Values from a table” from the “Bars represent” pull-down
menu; under the Two-way table options, select Stack, press OK.

- Specify C2-CY in the
Graph variables box and C1 in the Row labels box

- Click Chart Options
and select “Show Y as Percent” and “Within categories at level 1
(outermost)”

·
Press
OK twice.
|
|
To use Excel 2007:
·
Highlight the cells containing the two=way
table, including row and column labels.
·
Choose Insert from the mail tool bar
·
Under charts, use the first pull-down menu (Column)
to select 2D- Column, and then the third option in that row.
